Radiology & Your Pet
Radiology, or an X-ray, is a type of diagnostic imaging that helps your veterinarian see beyond your pet’s fur to their internal systems. X-rays use a small dose of radiation to take still images of your pet’s bones and other dense tissues. Because radiology uses radiation to take these images, it is not suitable for use on delicate tissues or developing fetuses.
Radiology provides important information about your pet’s internal systems that may not be easily gleaned from a simple physical exam. X-rays can show more than what can be seen by the naked eye.
X-rays are totally non-invasive and pain free. Depending on your pet’s condition, we may or may not need to sedate them to get a clear picture. We want to make sure that your pet’s experience is as stress-free as possible.
How We Use Ultrasonography to Diagnose Your Pet’s Issue
Ultrasounds for pets are identical to those used for humans. Unlike radiology, ultrasounds do not use radiation to take their pictures. Instead, ultrasounds use high frequency soundwaves to penetrate through your pet’s skin to take real-time images of your pet’s soft tissues. Because the soundwaves are less intense than radiation, ultrasounds are appropriate for use on delicate tissues and developing fetuses.
Like radiology, ultrasounds provide a useful look inside of your pet. Physical exams have their limitations but can be helpful in identifying areas that need a close look by ultrasound. Also, like radiology, ultrasounds are completely pain-free and non-invasive. Because these are real-time images, we likely won’t need to sedate your pet to get a closer look at their internal systems.
